Anyone who has painted with oil or acrylic paints can tell you what an invaluable piece of technology an easel is, and how essential it can be as part of the artistic process.
So it is staggering to think that one day, a long, long time ago, there were no easels – they just hadn’t been invented yet…
Artists would often paint on tables, on floors and on walls until some clever individual decided that in order to get a better view of the painting he (or she) was creating, that they would prop up a piece of board at an angle - and called it an easel!
This article explores it’s earliest and strangest history.
The origins of the word, “easel”
Strangely the word, “easel” comes from the Old Germanic language meaning literally, “donkey”, similar in meaning and spelling to the Dutch, “Ezel” and Danish “Aesel”, all derived from the latin for “Ass”, “Asinus”. The historical explanation being that loading up a donkey is in some way comparable to propping up a painting on a wooden stand.
The first easels
Easels go back well into classical history, going back to at least Ancient Egypian times and perhaps further. Roman scholar, Pliny the Elder mentioned a “large panel placed upon an easel” in his writings in the first century A.D.
Monks were known to use easels as part of their scribing during the 12th century A.D., which at the time was akin to both writing and drawing - such were the intricacies of the manuscripts that were written (and copied) at the time. However it wasn’t until the 13th century that easels (and early oil paints) were used in replacement of wall murals
Art for the masses
This freed up art to become a much more accessible past time for the masses, who duly took to this new art form with vigour and enthusiasm, particularly within the Renaissance period, with art being developed on canvas in dedicated studios rather than directly onto the walls in situ.
Common easel design and construction
Modern easels are split into two main types:
•“Tripod easels” (or “a-frame easels”) are based on three legs and often has a cross-bar and a mechanism for changing the surface angle whilst keeping the stability of the easel intact on its three legs.
•“H-frame easels” (or “studio easels”) are based on straight edges. Upright posts run in parallel to each other as do the horizontal cross-bars. H-frame easels also commonly have mechanisms to vary the angle.
Variations on both of these main designs do exist such as “box easels” and “table easels” along with modern studio designs such as “platform easels” – all of which are commonly available to buy online and in art shops.
Easels are commonly created for three main usages:
•Field Easels – where portability and stability on uneven ground is often needed. Field easels are usually small, collapsible and made of light-weight materials and usual based on the “a-frame/tripod” design.
•Studio Easels – for studios where portability and weight is not a priority. As a result, studio easels tend to be quite solid and durable.
•Display easels – for the display of finished art works in places such as galleries and museums. These tend to be very simple with less need for the stability n necessary during the act of painting. Display easels tend to vary in size, and are sometimes custom built – especially for valuable paintings.

Canada is not a country which immediately springs to mind when it comes to diamonds – Russia and Botswana occupy top two slots – but since the discovery of diamonds in the Northwest Territories in 1991, Canada has become the world’s number 3 producer of diamonds by value.
The first diamond discovered was in the frozen Point Lake wilderness, approximately 200 miles northeast of the Canadian city of Yellowknife. Conditions here are extremely harsh, especially in the winter months with long nights, short days and extremely low temperatures. Irrespective, shortly after two mines were established, with a third on stream in 2006 and a forth in 2008.
Today, Canadian diamond mines are extracting around 3 pounds of diamonds every day – worth approximately US$1.5 million and this is set to rise as more fields and diamond bearing seams are uncovered.
The discovery of diamonds in the territory sparked a Klondike-like rush for establishing claims to prospecting areas. Claim offices in Nunavut and Iqaluit had prospectors queuing around the block to file claims and helicopters were used to drop claim stakes onto land in order to speed up the claim process. The diamond rush has led to a revival in the local economy which was already characterized by a very high cost of living. Renting a very basic apartment can set you back over CDN$1,600 a month and it is not uncommon to find skilled diamond workers from Armenia, Israel, and China being paid more than US$100,000 to service this blossoming industry.
A major selling feature for Canadian diamonds is that they are “clean”, that is, they are not produced from poorly made or exploited labor, nor the product of conflict and neither does the money generated from their sale end up financing civil wars which have been wracking countries in Africa and elsewhere. The global trade in conflict diamonds has long been a serious issue plaguing the diamond industry, after all, who really wants a diamond on their finger which may have cost someone their life or the money paid for it was used to buy weapons and bombs for terrorism?
Canada also has some of the most stringent environmental controls in the world, especially where it concerns mining in wilderness areas. Compared to countries such as Botswana and Russia, Canada has a highly advanced infrastructure and the industrial technology for extracting diamonds with minimal disruption and long-term damage to the environment. Aside from being conflict-free, Canadian diamonds are also the most eco-friendly, naturally occurring diamonds available on the market today.
As a result of this “clean” reputation, Canadian diamonds are in demand by the fashion industry and consumers with a growing thirst for environmentally friendly products. They can be identified as Canadian diamonds because they are etched with a trademark polar bear, which is not visible to the naked eye and doesn’t detract from their beauty. Celebrities who have endorsed the “conflict free” diamonds include a string of Hollywood A-listers such as Jodie Foster, Meryl Streep, Uma Thurman, Rene Russo and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Sweets and candy have always been favourite with children for year’s and none more so than the classic Jolly Rancher candies. We all have fond memories of these fruity hard candies, however you may be surprised to hear that their history dates back much further than you first thought!
The sweets were first introduced after the founding of the Jolly Rancher Company in 1949. The company was founded in Golden, Colorado by a couple named Bill and Dorothy Harmsen. It is believed that the reasoning behind the naming of the company was that it suggested a homely, hospitable western company. The original focus wasn’t originally on hard candies as the company initially manufactured chocolate, ice cream and candies which were sold at several stores in the local Denver area. Sales of their hard candies grew significantly over the following couple of years to the point where they became the Jolly Rancher Company’s main focus abd the continued on developing and expanding their line in hard candy.
As sales increased, in 1951 the decision was taken to move production from the Golden factory to Wheat Ridge in Colorado. The success of the Jolly Ranchers continued to increase with the company being sold to Beatrice foods in 1966. Seventeen years later, Beatrice foods was then sold to Leaf International, a major European candy manufacturer which was founded about 10 years before the Jolly Rancher Company. The following 2 decades saw significant developments in the Jolly Rancher brand with the first being in 1996 when Hershey acquired the North America branch of Leaf, which included the Jolly Rancher candy brands. Hershey decided to branch out and create variations of the original hard Candy. A year after the initial acquisition, sugar free versions of the original hard candies were manufactured as well as soft jelly bean Jolly Ranchers. The range was improved again in 1999 with a change in formula which intensified the fruit flavour.
At the turn of the millennium Hershey started to introduce yet more products with fruit chew lollipops going into production in 2001 and fruit chews candy being put into production soon after that. The range of flavours was extended in 2002 with the introduction of blue raspberry hard candies. Candy connoisseurs with a taste for for sharper flavours were rewarded around 2004 when Hershey decided to start manufacturing their screaming sours candies. The range of products and flavours has continued to expand over the past 5 years, with their popularity showing no sign of wavering.
Fans of the sweets have sought to find other ways of enjoying the hard candies, some even formulating drinks recipes based on the various flavours available. A brief internet search will reveal recipes for everything from vodka shots to simple fruit juice drinks based around the popular sweet. Some of the more artistically inclined fans of Jolly Ranchers have even found ways of moulding the candies into different forms of edible art.
Jolly Ranchers continue to be popular in America to this day. They are slightly trickier to come by in UK shops and specialist retailers have taken to importing the sweets specially.
Dave Matthews is writing on behalf of American Soda, a leading UK importer of Jolly Ranchers.

Johann Sebastian Bach was one of the top classical music composers of all time – so famous today to the he is commonly known as simply “Bach”. A native German, Bach was a composer, organist and violinist and produced classical religious and secular works for choirs, solo instruments and orchestras.
Fixed in time in the Baroque music movement (1600-1750) Bach was a primary driver of change within it. Bach’s lifetime was one of fame, self doubt and amazing achievement with a legacy that lasts to this day.
Childhood
Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Eisenach to Johann Ambrosius Bach and Maria Elisabeth Lammerhirt.
Bach’s mother died in 1694 with his father dying shortly after leaving him an orphan aged 10 to be raised by his older brother Johann Christoph Bach himself an organist. There he learned to copy, study and perform music and receiving valuable tuition from his brother.
Adulthood
Bach remained in Germany for most of his life despite his contemporary and musical rival Handel moving to England to further his interests.
Bach’s first wife, Maria Barbara, died in 1720 leaving Bach to raise seven children. This apparently triggered Bach to seek the solace of work and held the coveted position of musical director for many princes and dukes at this period, leaving his children in the care of others.
In 1721, Bach married his second wife, Anna Magdelena Wilcke, and took up a position in a Leipzig school and a local church. Here he extended his already burgeoning family with a further thirteen children, with seven tragically dying before they reached adulthood.
Death
Bach died (aged 65) on 28th July 1750 after a period of ill-health. He became blind shortly before his death after an “unsuccessful eye operation” which may have contributed towards his demise. Modern historians have argued that his death was a direct consequence of a stroke caused by pneumonia.
The Family Bach
Bach’s left behind a family that were also musically gifted, with his second wife being a talented musician and his eldest son, Wilhelm Friedermann Bach, becoming an accomplished organist. Many of Anna Magdelena’s notebooks survive today and contain many of the works composed by Bach’s family.
His Most Famous Works
Bach’s produced hundreds of pieces throughout his lifetime, many of which are still played today. Amongst the most famous are the Magnificat, the Partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the Well-Tempered Clavier, the St. Matthew Passion, the St. John Passion, the Goldberg Variations, the Musical Offering, the English and French Suites, The Art of Fugue, the Brandenburg concertos, the Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, the Cello Suites. He also wrote over 200 cantatas (that we know of today) and approximately the same number of organ pieces such as the Toccata and Fugue in D minor and Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor.
Bach’s Musical Legacy
Bach’s classical music legacy is hard to measure in real terms, although there are a total of 1292 titles available to buy from the Chappell of Bond Street online catalogue (www.chappellofbondstreet.co.uk) at the last count including many such as “Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring” that have been edited and arranged since his death and are now played regularly in churches, schools and independent choirs across the world.
Bach’s status as a master classical music composer was only really cemented in the 19th century when a revival of his music triggered the editing and arranging of many of his pieces which remain in that form to this day.
It has been said that it was in fact Bach that was the trigger for the move from the Baroque era into the “classical era”, leaving his mark on classical music with fans that transcend time and nationality with music that still to this day has the power to strike awe and passion in the youngest and oldest of minds.
Clive Oliver Blacksmith is a classical music writer working for Chappell of Bond Street and celebrates the legacy of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach such as books about Bach, Bach recordings, Bach sheet music and performances.
